Quick answer

Waterproof plywood usually means BWP plywood, also called marine plywood. It is made under IS 710 with phenolic resin that survives repeated wetting. BWR plywood, under IS 303, uses a boiling-water-resistant resin. It is the usual choice for kitchen cabinets since it handles splashes and humidity. MR plywood, under IS 303, resists only occasional moisture; avoid it near the sink.

What actually makes plywood count as waterproof?

Plywood counts as waterproof when the resin bonding its layers can survive water, not just the wood itself. BWP plywood is tested under IS 710. It is bonded with phenolic resin and made for repeated wetting. This is why it suits sink units and bathrooms.

BWR plywood is tested under IS 303. It uses a boiling-water-resistant resin. It handles splashes and humidity well, but it is not meant to stay wet for long. This makes it the usual choice for the rest of the kitchen carcass. MR plywood is also tested under IS 303. Its resin resists only occasional moisture, not sustained water contact.

  • Ask which IS standard the board is certified to: IS 710 or IS 303
  • Ask what resin was used, not just whether the label says 'waterproof'
  • Ask for the certificate or invoice line showing the grade
  • Ask about the sheet size, usually 8x4 feet, and thickness, often 16mm or 19mm, for kitchen cabinets

Is waterproof plywood the same as marine plywood or laminated plywood?

Waterproof plywood and marine plywood usually mean the same thing: BWP plywood built to IS 710. They are two names for one grade, not two separate products.

Laminate is different. It is a surface finish glued onto a plywood core, not a measure of water resistance. A board can be laminated on the outside and still be MR grade underneath. That would make it a poor choice for a kitchen cabinet near water. For the full explanation of this grade, see the glossary entry on BWP (marine) plywood.

Which plywood grade is best suited for kitchen cabinets?

BWR plywood is the usual choice for the kitchen carcass, the cabinet boxes used in wardrobes and utility units too. It handles splashes and humidity well and holds screws firmly, which matters for shelves and hinges. Sheets commonly come in 8x4 feet size, in 16mm or 19mm thickness for cabinetry.

BWP plywood is better kept for the under-sink cabinet and any unit that stays wet, since it is made for repeated wetting. MR plywood should be avoided for units near the sink. Its resin resists only occasional moisture, not standing water or steam.

  • BWR plywood: kitchen carcass, wardrobes, utility cabinets
  • BWP plywood: under-sink cabinet, bathroom vanity units
  • MR plywood: avoid near the sink or any wet area

Can the same waterproof plywood go into a bathroom or an outdoor area?

BWP plywood suits bathroom vanities and sink units. Its good-for uses cover exactly that kind of sustained water contact.

For decking or any permanent outdoor exposure, InteriorIQ's material data does not cover sustained weather exposure for BWP plywood. Check the manufacturer's exterior-grade specification before fitting it outdoors. Ask the vendor for the resin type and exposure rating in writing, rather than relying on the word waterproof alone.

How do you judge termite resistance and overall plywood quality?

Core density and the resin bond are what the IS 710 and IS 303 standards actually test, not a brand name. Phenolic resin bonds BWP plywood for sustained wetting. A boiling-water-resistant resin bonds BWR plywood for splashes and humidity.

Ask for the ISI mark and the IS standard number on the invoice, rather than relying on marketing claims of being termite-proof or premium. This page does not rank commercial brands. The methodology note in the sources section explains how InteriorIQ sources its material standards.

Frequently asked questions

What is boiling water resistant plywood?

Boiling water resistant plywood, or BWR, is bonded with a resin that survives boiling water tests under IS 303. It handles splashes and kitchen humidity well. This is why it is the usual choice for kitchen cabinet carcasses. It is not meant for areas that stay wet for long, like a bathroom floor cabinet.

8x4 के प्लाईवुड की कीमत क्या है?

Plywood sheet prices depend on the grade, brand and thickness you choose, so InteriorIQ's rate card does not quote a single per-sheet figure. BWR plywood for kitchens usually costs less than BWP marine plywood. Share your kitchen size on WhatsApp, and InteriorIQ will give the exact material cost as a line item.

Which brands of plywood are termite-proof in India?

No plywood brand is fully termite-proof. Quality depends more on the grade and resin used than on the brand. BWP and BWR plywood made to IS 710 or IS 303 use resins that resist moisture and insect attack better than lower grades like MR. Ask for ISI certification and check the warranty terms before buying any sheet.

किचन के लिए कौन सा बोर्ड बेस्ट है?

Kitchen cabinets usually use BWR plywood, made under IS 303 with a boiling-water-resistant resin. It handles splashes and humidity near the sink and stove well. BWP marine plywood, under IS 710, resists even more water but costs more. It is better kept for under-sink units. MR plywood should be avoided near the sink.

Kitchen ke liye waterproof plywood kaunsa use karein?

For kitchen carcasses, BWR plywood made under IS 303 is the common choice. It resists splashes and humidity without the higher cost of marine plywood. Reserve BWP marine plywood, made under IS 710, for under-sink units that face direct, repeated wetting. Avoid MR plywood near the sink or wet counters.
