What is BWR plywood?

Definition

BWR plywood
BWR plywood is bonded with a boiling-water-resistant resin. It meets the IS 303 standard. It is the usual choice for kitchen cabinets.

Why does the grade of plywood matter when planning a kitchen or wardrobe?

The grade decides where a board can safely sit in the home. BWR plywood suits kitchen carcasses, wardrobes and utility cabinets. It handles splashes and daily humidity well. It is not meant for spots that stay wet for long, such as the floor of a sink unit.

BWP (marine) plywood is built for that wetter job. It suits under-sink cabinets and bathroom vanities, where water sits against the board often. It costs more than BWR plywood because of its stronger boiling-waterproof bond.

A common mistake is accepting 'waterproof ply' as a blanket term in a quotation. Ask the vendor which grade is quoted for which cabinet: BWR for the main carcass, BWP for the sink base. Check if the quotation names the IS standard each board meets.
